ecareers.sg Education & Career Guidance

Students looking to explore their educational and career interests can now tap into a new online resource—ecareers.sg—Singapore’s first interactive web-based Education and Career Guidance (ECG) portal for students. This portal is a welcomed aid for teachers and counselors in Singapore.

[caption id="attachment_191" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="ecareers.sg Education & Career Guidance"]ecareers.sg [/caption]

Using various profiling instruments available on the portal, students are able to clarify their interests and aptitudes, and are provided with a range of suitable career possibilities. One such instrument is the Personal Globe Inventory, which allows students to gauge their interest and confidence levels in a range of activities. Base on their interest patterns, the portal surfaces a list of occupation choices and information on the nature of these occupations. It also directs students to a list of relevant courses offered by local and overseas tertiary institutions, hence helping students take steps towards realizing their career aspirations. All profiling results and education and career information are eventually captured in individual e-portfolios, which students can retrieve and review over time.

In addition to guiding students on career choices and courses in tertiary institutions, ecareers.sg also gives students a head start in essential job-seeking skills. This is done through online training modules aimed at sharpening students resume-writing, interview and decision-making skills, among others.

As a web-based portal in Singapore, ecareers.sg is easily accessible in school, at home or even in public places through the country. Teachers, career guidance coordinators and school counselors can use it to help students clarify their goals, identify their strengths and career opportunities, and then guide them toward their career aspirations. Parents can also play a more active role in their children’s education and career development process.

Singapore Challenger Results 2011

Little-known 21-year-old Andrej Martin of Slovakia created the biggest upset in the Singapore ATP Challenger, upsetting Asian Games gold medalist and top seed Somdev Devevarman of India to enter the semi-finals on Friday.

On a cloudy day at the Kallang Tennis Centre, the 177-ranked Martin outpaced Somdev to register a 6-3, 6-4 win in 85 minutes.

The defeat put the Indian Davis Cupper out of the tournament. He earlier lost in the doubles semi-finals.

[caption id="attachment_186" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Singapore Challenger Results 2011"]Singapore Challenger Results 2011[/caption]

Somdev and his South African partner Rik de Voest were beaten by Thailand's Ratiwattana Twins Sonchai and Sonchat, seeded second,  6-4, 6-7(2) 10-7.

Somdev started well, breaking Martin in the third game, but lost serve in the fourth and eighth games as Martin took the first set.

In the second set, Martin played some intelligent tennis, mixing drops, and passed the Indian regularly at the net with sharp angled returns.

He broke in the fifth game and then held serve to clinch the set and make it to the semifinals.

Somdev won a low 38 percent on service returns in the entire match.

"This is my first big win over a top 100 player and I'm thrilled; I was recovering from a long match yesterday and felt tired. I realised I could not rally to win and decided to attack. This move paid off," the Bratislava resident after victory.

"I'm looking for better results the way I'm playing,"he added.

Somdev praised Martin. "I don't want to take anything away from Andrej; he played very well and served very well. I didn't move well which is my strength. It's hard to play with rain around, but all this is a part of professional tennis and it's a learning process for me. But all credit to my opponent," he said.

Somdev got 17 ATP points for his efforts in singles and 33 from the doubles event. He will now play in the South African Open.

"It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

Reporting from Beijing and Tokyo
An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking office buildings in Tokyo and setting off a devastating tsunami that swept away cars and boats.

The quake — the world's fifth largest since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Survey — struck at 2.46 p.m. local time.

There were reports of injuries in Tokyo as officials tried to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake and tsunami, but there were no immediate details.

Japanese television showed aerial footage of an ominous 13-foot muddy wave washing across land along the northeastern coast near the epicenter.

Tsunami Alert Singapore

In various locations, live TV coverage showed massive damage from the tsunami, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture. Waves could be seen splashing into city streets and over bridges.

All trains in Tokyo were stopped, and black plumes of smoke rose over the skyline. Office workers rushed out of their buildings. Subways were halted, trapping commuters underground. In the nation with the world's third-largest economy, all airports were closed.

"The train was rocking sharply back and forth," said Anthony Weiss, a 29-year-old from Florida studying Japanese in Tokyo who was on a train when the quake hit. "People covered their heads with their bags as dust and small debris fell. Something sprung a leak, as there was a lot of water on the platform."

Kohl's Offers a DeLonghi Coffee & Espresso Machine for $50!

For the longest time I have been DYING to get an espresso machine.  I'm a coffee fiend, but you'll usually finding me making my own at home because I am too dang cheap to go to Starbucks on a regular basis.  The boyfriend worked at Starbucks when he was younger, which means that he is extremely talented at making coffee drinks, so I dream of the day he can make me actual frou frou espresso beverages.  {Cinnamon Dolce Latte, anyone?}

The only reason I do not yet own an espresso machine is because I can't see shelling out $100+ for a good machine.  Luckily, Kohl's is having the espresso maker sale to end all espresso maker sales today.  You can snag the DeLonghi Steam Espresso & Coffee Machine that you see above for just $55.99 today!  Normally this machine sells for $139.99.

PLUS, enter promo code "NEW8360" and save an additional 10% on your purchase, which brings the price down to $50.40.  Shipping adds just 99 cents to your order.

This deal is just incredible.  Finally I will have my espresso drinks.  Woot! :)

Woodgrove Secondary School Singapore

Woodgrove High School (also known as HS-3 or the Western Loudoun High School) is a public secondary school which opened in Purcellville, Virginia for the 2010-2011 school year on the Fields Farm, bordering the northern part of the town. Woodgrove is part of Loudoun County Public Schools and opened in the same year as Tuscarora High School of Leesburg.

Woodgrove Secondary School History

Woodgrove was planned on around 2000 to alleviate overcrowding primarily at Loudoun Valley High School, where the student population has doubled since the 1995-1996 school year. In 2005, the Loudoun County School Board approved the use of Fields Farm, a property north of the Town of Purcellville on County land, but in an urban growth zone jointly controlled by the Town and the County, known as PUGAMP. The town of Purcellville was not pleased with the decision, because of traffic concerns and also because it was expected to provide essential services to the new high school, despite being located outside of the Town. The School Board claimed that the high school's best location was in Fields Farm, and on June 20, 2006, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted 6-3 to start construction of Woodgrove on Fields Farm. The Town of Purcellville pursued legal action in court to stop its construction with a Richmond legal firm; the case is still pending in Court. In July 2006, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors reexamined the possibility of opening Woodgrove in Round Hill, but efforts were unsuccessful.

New world's smallest man Junrey Balawing poised to claim title

MEET JUNREY BALAWING, SOON TO BE CROWNED THE WORLD’S SMALLEST MAN

Junrey Balawing of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines, who is just 22 inches high, is set to become the world's shortest man when he turns 18 in June.

According to the Sun, the 17-year-old, who is tinier than a one-year-old, will take the title by smashing five inches off the current record.

[caption id="attachment_92" align="aligncenter" width="433" caption="Junrey Balawing World's Smallest Man"] World's Smallest Man[/caption]

Balawing has not grown since his first birthday, struggles to walk and cannot stand up for long, but he beams with pride when talking about his likely world record.

"If I were the smallest man in the world, it would be very cool," the tabloid quoted Balawing, as saying.

The current titleholder is Nepal's Khagendra Thapa Magar, who is 26.4 inches tall.

A Guinness World Records spokesman confirmed that they would be considering Balawing's claim.

"We are looking to review the claim when Junrey Balawing turns 18, which is when candidates for this title can officially apply for the record," the spokesman.

Hatice Kocaman, 21, from Turkey, is the world's smallest woman, at just 28 inches tall. (ANI)
