F1 Singapore Grand Prix Preview By Mercedes GP Season's Only Night Race

Bus and train operator SBS Transit will be enhancing its services to cater to the expected increase in ridership during the Singapore Grand Prix from Sept 21 to 26.

For trains, some 200 trips will be added. From Sept 23 to 25, operating hours for the North East Line (NEL) will be extended.

Commuters can expect shorter waiting times (five minutes) from after the evening peak hour to midnight on Friday and from noon to midnight on Saturday and Sunday. After midnight, trains will run at a frequency of six minutes on all the three evenings.

The last LRT train at Punggol and Sengkang will only depart after the last NEL train arrives at their respective stations.

Affected bus services

Before the full closure for the F1 race- Sept 19 to 20 - Service 130 will skip the bus stop along Coleman Street, opposite The Adelphi due to the construction of a pedestrian overhead bridge for the race. It will instead travel via St Andrew's Road, turning into Stamford Road before resuming its route along Victoria Street.

Earthquake map shows epicenter in central Virginia

The U.S. Geological Survey has posted this map of the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that hit central Virginia just before 2 p.m. today, sending tremors up and down the East Coast.

The yellow glow represents the area where potential damage is deemed "light" and perceived shaking is "moderate."

The quake’s frequency hit the geology of the region just right, like a tuning fork, and reverberated outward, said Alexander Gates, the chairman of earth and environmental sciences at Rutgers-Newark, and an earthquake expert. But there’s no likely danger for aftershocks of the Virginia quake, which will be significantly more minor, he said.

“That was pretty good, huh? I was impressed,” Gates said. “You don’t get earthquakes like that so often on the East Coast.”

Though small earthquakes occur in New Jersey all the time, earthquake experts said today's shaking was highly unusual.

"It's probably the largest one people have felt in New Jersey in decades," said Martha Withjack, professor of geological sciences at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

The Virginia-centered earthquake was felt all along the East Coast because of the nature of the area's rocks, Withjack said. Unlike the West Coast, where the underlying rocks are broken from frequent quakes, the older rocks beneath New Jersey are long and solid. That means the shaking in Virginia was easily transferred to New Jersey.

"The energy all the way from Virginia got transferred to us," Withjack said.

The magnitude of the earthquake was a 5.9, according to the USGS.

Mentor Fire Department recommends checking the batteries in your smoke detector twice a year. They also suggest testing the alarm every month.

The National Fire Protection Association said death rates are more than twice as high in fires without working smoke alarms as ones in which the smoke detectors work.

The NFPA estimates that 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke detectors.

Also, more than half of the nonworking smoke detectors malfunction because they had missing or disconnected batteries. Another 20 percent of smoke detector failures happen because its batteries are dead, according to the NFPA.

So stay safe. Replace and test your smoke detectors' batteries while resetting your clocks.

Narita Airport Status Update

Tokyo's Narita Intl. Airport & Haneda Airport Resume Operation

Meanwhile, Tokyo's Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport have both resumed operation according to Korean aviation officials.
The two airports were affected by Friday's earthquake but since the runways were not severely damaged, they both resumed some flights later in the day.

As of Saturday, Haneda is fully operational, however, Narita Airport only has some flights coming in and going out.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's northeastern coast was a swampy wasteland of broken houses, overturned cars, sludge and dirty water Saturday as the nation awoke to the devastating aftermath of one of its greatest disasters, a powerful tsunami created by one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.

The death toll from Friday's massive magnitude 8.9 quake stood at more than 200, but an untold number of bodies were believed to be lying in the rubble and debris, and Japanese were bracing for more bad news as authorities tried to reach the hardest-hit areas.

Aerial footage showed military helicopters lifting people on rescue tethers from rooftops and partially submerged buildings surrounded by water and debris. At one school, a large white "SOS" had been spelled out in English.

The earthquake that struck off the northeastern shore was the biggest recorded quake ever to hit Japan. It ranked as the fifth-largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than one that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month, scientists said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said an initial assessment found "enormous damage," adding that the Defense Ministry was sending troops to the hardest-hit region.

The official casualty toll was 236 dead, 725 missing and 1,028 injured, although police said 200-300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area. Authorities said they weren't able to reach the area because of damage to the roads.

Black smoke could still be seen in the skies around Sendai, presumably from gas pipes snapped by the quake or tsunami.

Singaporeans unhurt in Japan quake: MFA

NO Singaporeans were hurt in the major earthquake that shook Japan on Friday, said a Minstry of Foreign Affairs spokesman.

As of 6pm Singapore time on Friday, the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo has not received any reports of Singaporeans injured in the 8.9 magnitude quake or its ensuing tsunamis.

The MFA spokesman said the Ministry has activated its Emergency Contact Network (ECN) system and will continue to establish contact with registered Singaporeans in the affected areas.

Singapore Challenger Results 2011

Little-known 21-year-old Andrej Martin of Slovakia created the biggest upset in the Singapore ATP Challenger, upsetting Asian Games gold medalist and top seed Somdev Devevarman of India to enter the semi-finals on Friday.

On a cloudy day at the Kallang Tennis Centre, the 177-ranked Martin outpaced Somdev to register a 6-3, 6-4 win in 85 minutes.

The defeat put the Indian Davis Cupper out of the tournament. He earlier lost in the doubles semi-finals.

Somdev and his South African partner Rik de Voest were beaten by Thailand's Ratiwattana Twins Sonchai and Sonchat, seeded second,  6-4, 6-7(2) 10-7.

Somdev started well, breaking Martin in the third game, but lost serve in the fourth and eighth games as Martin took the first set.

In the second set, Martin played some intelligent tennis, mixing drops, and passed the Indian regularly at the net with sharp angled returns.

He broke in the fifth game and then held serve to clinch the set and make it to the semifinals.

Somdev won a low 38 percent on service returns in the entire match.

"This is my first big win over a top 100 player and I'm thrilled; I was recovering from a long match yesterday and felt tired. I realised I could not rally to win and decided to attack. This move paid off," the Bratislava resident after victory.

"I'm looking for better results the way I'm playing,"he added.

Somdev praised Martin. "I don't want to take anything away from Andrej; he played very well and served very well. I didn't move well which is my strength. It's hard to play with rain around, but all this is a part of professional tennis and it's a learning process for me. But all credit to my opponent," he said.

Somdev got 17 ATP points for his efforts in singles and 33 from the doubles event. He will now play in the South African Open.

Tsunami hits Japan after 8.8 magnitude earthquake
An earthquake measuring 8.9 struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing "many injuries", major tsunami damage and at least one fire.

The Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture. Black smoke was seen billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted.

Television showed cars bobbing in water along side fishing boats. A 50 cm tsunami hit Japan's northern coast.

"The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks," Reuters correspondent Linda Sieg said.

"It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

US officials said the 8.8-magnitude quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles. The stock market extended its losses after the quake was announced.

Japan's northeast Pacific coast, called Sanriku, has suffered from quakes and tsunamis in the past and a 7.2 quake struck on Wednesday. In 1933, a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people. Last year fishing facilities were damaged after by a tsunami caused by a strong tremor in Chile.

MANILA, Philippines – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami alert following the 8.9-magnitude quake that hit the northern coasts of Honshu in Japan before 2:00 p.m. today.

Officials of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology estimated the first tsunami waves to reach the Philippine coasts around 5:50 p.m. today.

Philvolcs Director Renato Solidum is now advising residents in coastal areas to evacuate and seek refuge in higher grounds.

The agency earlier issued tsunami alert level 1 in the provinces in the northern and eastern coastlines of the country, namely, Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Quezon, Isabela, Aurora, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Samar, Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. As of 3:30 p.m, Philvolcs raised the alert level to 2.

The Philippine Coast Guard has also alerted its operatives in the country in light of the tsunami alert issued by the Philvolcs.

PCG chief Wilfredo Tamayo said its rescue teams across the country are on standby for any untoward incident, while advising all the vessels in the country to prevent from sailing at seas.

There were reports of injuries in Tokyo as officials tried to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake and tsunami, but there were no immediate details.

Japanese television showed aerial footage of an ominous 13-foot muddy wave washing across land along the northeastern coast near the epicenter.

In various locations, live TV coverage showed massive damage from the tsunami, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture. Waves could be seen splashing into city streets and over bridges.

All trains in Tokyo were stopped, and black plumes of smoke rose over the skyline. Office workers rushed out of their buildings. Subways were halted, trapping commuters underground. In the nation with the world's third-largest economy, all airports were closed.

"The train was rocking sharply back and forth," said Anthony Weiss, a 29-year-old from Florida studying Japanese in Tokyo who was on a train when the quake hit. "People covered their heads with their bags as dust and small debris fell. Something sprung a leak, as there was a lot of water on the platform."

Bali Earthquake 2011

Powerful quake of Indonesia's island of Bali

BALI, Indonesia — A powerful earthquake off Indonesia rattled the popular resort island of Bali early Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.5-magnitude quake struck at 1:08 a.m. (1708 GMT Thursday) and was centered 315 miles (510 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

It hit waters 160 miles (260 kilometers) northeast of Bali.

Beni Hendrawanto, of the country's geological and meteorology department, said it could be felt in the main city of Denpasar but there were no initial reports of damage or injuries.

Central Indonesia rocked by 6.6-magnitude quake; no damage reported
JAKARTA, Indonesia - An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook parts of central Indonesia early Friday, including the resort island of Bali, the country's geophysics agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake occurred at 12:08 a.m. local time, the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency said.

A Bali resident said he felt the quake strongly.

"It's fine in Kuta but I don't know about other areas," said Robin Malau, who lives in Bali's main tourist strip of Kuta.

Woodgrove High School (also known as HS-3 or the Western Loudoun High School) is a public secondary school which opened in Purcellville, Virginia for the 2010-2011 school year on the Fields Farm, bordering the northern part of the town. Woodgrove was planned on around 2000 to alleviate overcrowding primarily at Loudoun Valley High School, where the student population has doubled since the 1995-1996 school year. In 2005, the Loudoun County School Board approved the use of Fields Farm, a property north of the Town of Purcellville on County land, but in an urban growth zone jointly controlled by the Town and the County, known as PUGAMP. The town of Purcellville was not pleased with the decision, because of traffic concerns and also because it was expected to provide essential services to the new high school, despite being located outside of the Town. The School Board claimed that the high school's best location was in Fields Farm, and on June 20, 2006, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted 6-3 to start construction of Woodgrove on Fields Farm. The Town of Purcellville pursued legal action in court to stop its construction with a Richmond legal firm; the case is still pending in Court. In July 2006, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors reexamined the possibility of opening Woodgrove in Round Hill, but efforts were unsuccessful.

New world's smallest man Junrey Balawing poised to claim title

MEET JUNREY BALAWING, SOON TO BE CROWNED THE WORLD’S SMALLEST MAN

Junrey Balawing of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines, who is just 22 inches high, is set to become the world's shortest man when he turns 18 in June.

According to the Sun, the 17-year-old, who is tinier than a one-year-old, will take the title by smashing five inches off the current record.

A Guinness World Records spokesman confirmed that they would be considering Balawing's claim.

"We are looking to review the claim when Junrey Balawing turns 18, which is when candidates for this title can officially apply for the record," the spokesman.

Hatice Kocaman, 21, from Turkey, is the world's smallest woman, at just 28 inches tall. (ANI)

15 Asian universities among world's top 100 in reputation ranking

SINGAPORE, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Fifteen Asian universities made their way into the world's 100 best universities in a reputation ranking released on Thursday, including two Singapore universities.

Japan's University of Tokyo is the only Asian university among the top ten, coming in the eighth place on the list released for the first time by the Times Higher Education magazine. It is based on the views of 13,388 experienced academics in some 130 countries. Kyoto University is the second best in Asia and the 18th best in the world, according to the ranking.

In an increasingly competitive higher education marketplace, branding has become big business for universities.

Institutions know that, in a sense, the degrees they confer are worth only as much as their brand. In nations where tuition fees are established, students "buy" a brand that will appeal to the right businesses when it is time to find a job; their choice of university will become part of their own "brand identity". To attract the right calibre of academics, a university relies on its brand. And when those same academics submit a proposal for research funding or a paper to a leading journal, the brand of their institution may play a role in how their research is judged. The university's brand becomes part of their own brand as an academic.

The notion of a university as a brand is one that many in higher education are comfortable with. It induces a wave of nausea in others, who warn that by focusing on branding, universities promote a view of higher education as a commodity rather than as a good in itself.

But if a university is a brand, a key factor determining its strength is reputation in teaching and research (brand and reputation are distinct but related). And the views of academics on university reputation are crucial, for they give an insight into which institutions are best placed to attract top talent, and also influence the views of students and parents.

The results of the first Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings shed light on this increasingly important measure. The reputation ranking is drawn from a survey of more than 13,000 experienced academics worldwide, carried out by polling company Ipsos for our rankings data provider, Thomson Reuters. The data informed the current Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2010-11, but are now published in isolation for the first time, revealing clear discrepancies between some institutions' reputations and their overall ranking.

China Earthquake Administration sends experts to quake-hit SW province

Death toll rises to 14 in SW China earthquake

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- China Earthquake Administration has sent experts to the quake-hit region in Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province to offer expertise and direct relevant work, the administration said Thursday.

The administration said in a statement on its website that it initiated a grade III emergency response after the quake and dispatched a team of experts to the quake zone, headed by an official with the administration's emergency relief bureau.

The provincial earthquake bureau in Yunnan also sent two teams to the quake-hit region to collect information about the quake and conduct on-site monitoring, it said.

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale jolted Yingjiang County at 12:58 a.m. Beijing Time Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 kilometers, was monitored at 24.7 degrees north latitude and 97.9 degrees east longitude, the center said.

The quake caused heavy damage in Yingjiang as the epicenter is only about three kilometers away from the county. Adjacent counties including Longchuan, Lianghe, and Tengchong also felt the tremblor, according to the administration.

The draw also has some appeal at 9/4 with Ladbrokes and is worth a small saver.
